Getting Started with vSphere Integrated Containers v0.4.0

I’ve been working very closely with our vSphere Integrated Container (VIC) team here at VMware recently, and am delighted to say that v0.4.0 is now available for download from GitHub. Of course, this is still not supported in production, and is still in tech preview. However for those of you interested, it gives you an opportunity to try it out and see the significant progress made by the team over the last couple of months. You can download it from bintray. This version of VIC is bringing us closer and closer to the original functionality of “Project Bonneville” for running containers as VMs (not in VMs) on vSphere. Well, when it comes to technological business, certain rules are in place when it comes to longevity. You can’t survive several decades without have an effective strategy which changes with time. And one of those important strategies is to creatively destroy your own product before it becomes a burden for you. The thing is that your competition is definitely going to kill it. But for your own survival, you have got to do it first before somebody else do that. When you are able to overpower that transition, you will learn to survive another decade. Otherwise, chances are high for your business to lose its edge and slowly fade away.

Goodbye vSphere Client for Windows (C#) – Hello…

Today we have two important announcements. First, the C# client (AKA Desktop Client/thick client/vSphere Client for Windows) will not be available for the next version of vSphere. Current versions of vSphere (6.0, 5.5) will not be affected, as those will follow the standard support period. You’ve heard this from us in the past, but we’ve been waiting for a sufficient replacement before finally moving forward. Second, we want to talk about the recent vSphere HTML5 Web Client Fling, user adoption, and VMware’s focus on bringing a great user experience. Like the Embedded Host Client Fling (which made it into vSphere in 6.0U2), we plan on bringing this product into a supported release soon.

The Benefits of vMotion Over Live Migration…

vMotion or Live Migration? The two seem extremely similar. Each migrates running VMs among hosts, with unnoticeable downtime to the end users. Like a fine wine or high-performance sports car, you have to spend time with each to begin noticing the subtle, yet distinct, differences between these two.
