A few months ago I was approached to write an article about my VMware home lab that I recently built. Since I had already been halfway through writing it up for my own blog I took the opportunity to get some exposure for my site and myself. Well a few weeks ago, my article was published on TechGenix. What a great way to get my blog and name out there. For those that don’t know the whole lab story, here’s some quick details.
I started with 1 Intel NUC and planned to run nested hosts inside a single vCenter. After doing some research about how others did it, it didn’t seem practical for what I wanted to do. Everything I had been reading showed that after getting the 3 hosts up, you were basically out of resources. So I bit the bullet and purchased 2 more NUCs, all the exact same specs. This allowed me to load each with 32GB of RAM, a single NVMe drive (vSAN Caching) and a single SSD (vSAN Capacity). This gave me plenty of room to run some test VMs for Windows/Linux/Appliances. So far I’ve been able to test deploy Log Insight, vRealize Automation, vRealize Operations, and plenty of Domain Controllers and Windows Core Servers. If you’re looking to not spend a ton of money, but get a lab up and running with a fairly small investment, then I would highly suggest a 3 NUC cluster. And since the 7th gen NUCs have been out for a bit, I’m sure you can find plenty of sales on 6th gen NUCs (or just find someone upgrading their lab).

vCenter Server 6.5 Update 1d Includes Third Update to HTML5 vSphere Client
vSphere 6.5 Update 1d was released in December 2017. While this update primarily focused on security and package updates for vCenter Server and ESXi, it also came with an update to the HTML5 vSphere Client. Put your skills to the test – take a VMware Challenge Lab
For those of you that unfamiliar with the Challenge lab series, we have worked on these labs alongside our Global Support Services team. These are the people that provide awesome support for our products when you need it. We gathered a list of potential pitfalls that they receive calls on most often and built scenarios around them in a lab. It is then up to you to resolve that issue, almost a we break it, you fix it lab!
I recently had an issue with some Dell FX2 Blade Software iSCSI Adapters that were not persistent on a reboot. This meant, every time the host was rebooted we had to go in and manually recreate the iSCSI adapter so the hosts could see storage. Obviously, that is not a solution. The blades are running the latest version of ESXi 6.0 and all drivers on the blades are up to date as well, with no affect on the behavior. After a bit of research I discovered parameters for the bnx2fc adapters. One named bnx2fc_autodiscovery, which is the parameter to control auto FCoE discovery during system boot is what I was after. By default this is set to disabled which is why the adapters are not showing up after the host is rebooted.
The command to see these parameters is:
esxcli system module parameters list -m bnx2fc
This will show you what they are currently set to, and next to bnx2fc_autodiscovery you will see it is blank, meaning it’s disabled. In order to enable it, you run the following:
vSphere 6.5 Update 1 – Under the Hood
I’m excited to announce that vSphere 6.5 Update 1 is now available and it has some great enhancements. While we have seen 5 patch releases so far, 6.5 Update 1 rolls all of those updates together as well as includes some long awaited functionality. Without further ado, let’s take a look under the hood of this highly anticipated release!
